Thinking about this piece from last years exhibition that came from a conversation with my friend @jk5nyc about what it is we prioritize and tend to.

A large part of my process that goes unseen is writing. When I’m preparing for an exhibition or a larger work I go through stages and stages of writing to give me space to think through and better understand situations and contexts that are inspiring the work and will later inform the works.
I don’t consider myself a writer so it’s not my intention to claim that or to share it on its own but since all of my work is informed by abstracted typography it is some of the most important and personally rewarding stages in my process.
Lately, I’ve started working on an exhibition for early next year. This video shows (most of) one of three documents I’ve been working in as I’m understanding some of the work and directions I’m planning for the show. A lot of this won’t get used but shows a portion of the process that goes in to the thinking and planning that informs the foundation of the works.
Contextually, the show I’m working towards is pulling from my experiences and understandings of my injury and recovery last fall. I’m not interested in making a monument to the injury itself, but what was learned and taken away from the experience that connects to shared points of humanity. In short there was a lot for me to and still am processing. It was near-fatal and although I’m lucky with how my recovery has been, it provided me new perspectives and levels of appreciation that were challenging to arrive at but rewarding to gain.
I don’t normally share these letterform maps because I like to encourage interaction and looking vs simply reading but thought it would be good to share some context to how works are informed by letterforms. This is a WIP for a new piece.
First Image - I start by initially laying out the characters and sketching the rough forms in place. In all instances the letters used are the works title so there isn’t any mystery to what it is. In this image I use color-blocking to help me organize the words from the title “Outside of Time” - Blue = Outside, Red = of, Yellow = Time.
Second Image - once the layout is roughed out I explore the relationships that could be found within and between the letters. I always try to maintain the letter’s integrity but it gets abstracted when the characters start overlaying, playing with foreground/ background and in a later stage color.
I started this practice years ago and the forms have evolved and taken different shapes but the intention is still the same. Reading allows us to consume information and experience differently than if we are looking. I’m not as interested in how to make the work more legible as I am in trying to make a new way of exploring an idea.

Gratitude post: A few weeks before my exhibition in August I sustained a serious head injury and for the last 5 months have been recovering. There have been stages to the recovery process but I’m glad to say I’m mostly recovered at this point. These first two pics are from August, and the last was a surprise visit from friends in October. I don’t share personally on here too often but the support and love @malenarose and I have received has been humbling and at times overwhelming for me. I’ve been discharged from the hospital since September recovering at home but I still get overwhelmed from the situation and feelings of gratitude from these last couple of months. If you sent messages, cards, gifts, helped us in any way, thank you. It meant so much for us to feel connected to loved ones during that time. And especially to my love @malenarose for taking care of and being with me everyday. These last couple months have been challenging but have given me new depths of appreciation. Here’s to a better year and wishing everyone a safe and happy holiday π
I had the pleasure of shooting with @owley.studio earlier this year to capture some process shots. Each piece goes through a series of stages from sanding, laminating, more sanding, color mixing, painting, and finally assembly. Here are a few of my fav shots π

On view at @hashimotocontemporary (NYC) through this Saturday 10.7
Instagram usually doesn’t like images with text but I sincerely appreciate @epricco ‘s perspective here on the work currently up at @hashimotocontemporary (NYC) for “The Shadow of the Sun”.
In all my exhibitions I try to have the works connect narratively so it offers an overarching perspective that isn’t singular or random. In a truly rewarding sense I didn’t fully connect what that narrative was until much later in the shows preparation when I could see the works together and understand I was working through a need for acceptance that stemmed from the personal space of the last couple years and a diagnosis of dementia for a loved one. Recognizing that and being able to make the work allowed me to focus on the theme of acceptance outside of the work for myself. Each piece represents a different point in time in that journey - from the truly accepting to metaphors of distraction to reflections of the taxing moments. All are relevant and necessary to appreciating the journey.

My solo exhibition, “The Shadow of the Sun” is opening Sept. 16th at @hashimotocontemporary (NYC).

I’ve been working on this show for about 8 months, and it’s been simultaneously one of the most rewarding explorations for me in my work and equally difficult. I gave myself the runway to dig in to some areas that I would normally shy away from–mainly processing the love and relationship of a family member diagnosed with dementia in conversation with post-pandemic perspectives.

The show will run from 9.16-10.7, with an opening on Saturday, Sept 16th, 6-8pm. If you’re in town during the opening please stop by and say hi!
-
Lastly, if interested, an advance preview of the works will be available to subscribers of my “Studio Updates” list. If you would like a copy of the preview when it’s available, email me (on the last slide here) or use the link in bio to get on the list :)

I’m looking forward to sharing more of the work when I have more images, but in the mean time, thank you for looking and your support π
Been grinding most of this month to get works prepped for the framer in time for my upcoming exhibition in September. Each piece goes through a pretty lengthy preparation process before it’s mounted in its final state - sanding, laminating, edge finishing, more sanding, priming, probably more sanding, painting.

“The Shadow of the Sun” opens 9.16 at @hashimotocontemporary (NYC). If you are in the area please swing by :)

To help commemorate @3sixteen ‘s 20-year anniversary we’re releasing a seven color screenprint, edition of 100, signed & numbered.
The screen print represents 3Sixteen’s motto, “The Last Shall Be First” in varying shade of blue, a nod to both the range in products they offer and also the aging effect of denim. From this, we used a section of the work as line art for the vacation shirt collab also released today :)
Links are available in the bio.
